Couchsurfing downfall

Many of you know may already know about Couchsurfing.com, it was started as a website helping travellers fing a place to stay over night, but now, few years later, it became a huge social network of more than 5,000.000 users worldwide. From the very beginning, Couchsurfing differed from other social networks because of the people using it: students, happy couples and old professors, anybody who was willing to meet new people and make friends. Therefore there was almost no negative feedback whatsoever. Some even claimed  that Couchserfing community is one of the few benefits of globalization…but times have changed.

Even though the most of Couchsurfers were male, the website itself wasn’t gender-oriented at all, plus almost nobody used it as a tool for finding partners in other countries. Since its turn into a growth-oriented, private company, more and more “surfers” came there, but the spirit of friendly and open-minded community was completely lost. No, it does not mean that the whole idea was screwed up, thousands of people still travelled and stayed overnight in various places, although it was not so safe as it used to be before.

What is Couchsufring.com now? Big community of 5.000.000 worldwide, thousands of travellers and hosters… Thousands, but not millions. It means that other people either signed up and never used it or used it as a tool for meeting new people in their local area. With mostly male users, girls get about 4 or 5 times more feedback than guys, which makes it hard to use website sometimes.

So, if you want to meet new people around or hang out with somebody during your vacation or trip, better go to the coffee-house or any other public place and smile instead of spending hours and hours in frind

  2. I remember the shift in Couchsurfing. Many of the discussions on the bulletin boards centered around the CS’s attempt to become a 501(c)(3) organization. It was not possible to continue that way, and the only option that would keep CS online was the one they chose. Since that time, I’ve found that I get more couch requests due to the improvements in the search functions. While I don’t love the new format for couch requests, I see the utility of it. In the end, though, I’m preparing to host my EIGHTH surfer this year. I am very selective with surfers. I require multiple references, and I don’t respond to creepy people who offer massages (yuck). Since last summer, I have had the most marvelous time running around the city with my surfers, learning from them, and acting as personal concierge in the city that I love. Couchsurfing.org will live and thrive as long as I’m here, and as long as amazing people seek out my couch.

Unfortunately, first time I’ve heard af CS was in 2011, so I just was able to meet few surfers in Moscow and show them around.
Great to hear from you! 🙂
